Solar flood lights charge from the sun by day and light a driveway, yard or gate at night without any wiring to the DB board, so they keep working through load-shedding. OutdoorLighting.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form with the area you want lit and the number of fittings, and we pass it to independent local solar lighting suppliers and installers, who quote you directly. We do not sell, stock or install anything ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation to accept a quote.
Separate panel or integrated: which solar flood light?
There are two main designs. An integrated solar flood light has the panel built onto the back or top of the head, so it only works where the fitting itself sees full sun. A split design has a separate panel on a 3 to 5 m cable, so the light can sit on a shaded south wall or under the eaves while the panel faces north on the roof. For most South African homes the split design charges better and lasts longer. For smaller paths and beds, see solar garden lights or the wider solar lights range.
200W labels and real output
Many solar LED flood lights are sold as 100W, 200W or 300W, but the label rarely matches the true LED power or the battery behind it. Ask suppliers for the figures that matter:
- Lumens actually delivered, not just watts
- Battery capacity in Wh or mAh, and whether it is lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4)
- Panel size in real watts, measured in centimetres
- Run time on full and dimmed modes after a cloudy day
A heavier panel and bigger battery usually beat a bigger number on the box.
Motion sensors, remotes and security
Solar powered flood lights with a motion sensor stay dim or off until movement is detected, then jump to full brightness, which stretches the battery through long winter nights. Most come with a remote to choose dusk-to-dawn, dim-plus-sensor or timer modes. For perimeter protection during load-shedding, mount them at 3 to 4 m, out of easy reach, and aim them away from neighbours. Pair them with mains security lights or wired flood lights where you need guaranteed output.
Placement, sun hours and weather
Panels need around four to six good sun hours a day, so face them north and clear of trees and roof shadows. Highveld hail can crack cheap panels, and coastal salt air corrodes thin brackets, so ask for tempered glass, IP65 or better and stainless fixings. Solar fittings need no CoC, but if you mix them with wired lights, a registered electrician must sign off the fixed wiring.
Clean the panel every few months, as dust and bird droppings quietly reduce charging, especially in dry winter months.
What to include in your request
- Describe the area to light and its size
- Say where the panel can face north in full sun
- Choose motion sensor, dusk-to-dawn or both
- Give the mounting height and wall or pole
- Ask for real lumens and battery capacity in Wh
Solar Flood Lights for different properties
- Homes: motion-sensing solar flood lights over the driveway, gate and side passage for load-shedding
- Estates and complexes: solar flood lights over visitor parking, refuse areas and gatehouses without trenching new cables
- Farms and smallholdings: off-grid flood lights over kraals, sheds, borehole pumps and remote gates far from the supply
- Shops and offices: solar flood lights over parking bays, signage and back-of-house yards as backup during outages
- Industrial sites: temporary or backup solar flood lighting over yards, containers and perimeter fences
- Lodges, guesthouses and venues: solar flood lights over lodge parking, service roads and staff housing in the bush
- Municipalities, schools and clubs: solar flood lighting at taxi ranks, park entrances and community halls without grid connection
