Outdoor lighting covers every light outside a building, from the wall lights at the front door to garden spotlights, solar lights, flood lights and street lighting. OutdoorLighting.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form with the outdoor lights you need, and we pass it to independent local lighting suppliers, electricians and installers, who quote you directly. We do not sell, stock, install or repair anything ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation to accept a quote. Tell us about the property, the fittings and whether you need installation.
The five groups of outdoor lights
Outdoor light fittings fall into five broad groups, and our pages follow the same layout as a lighting plan:
- Walls and entrances: outdoor wall lights, bulkheads, lanterns and patio lights for doors, garages and the stoep
- Garden and landscape: garden lights, spotlights, bollards, pole lights, string lights, LED strips and pool lights
- Solar lighting: solar lights for gardens, walls, floods and streets that keep working through load-shedding
- Security and area: flood lights, sensor security lights, street lights and sports field lighting
- Services and guides: installation, design, repairs, LED and waterproof lighting
Outdoor lighting for home, estate and business
Outdoor lighting for a home usually means a few wall lights, a sensor flood at the driveway and some garden lighting. Estates add bollards and pole lights along shared roads, signed off by the body corporate. Farms, businesses and municipalities need brighter area lighting on taller poles. Put every area on one request so suppliers can quote the full list of outdoor lights for the house or site.
Think about how each area is used. Entrances need enough light to find keys and see who is at the gate, gardens look best with softer accent lighting, and the perimeter benefits from sensor lights that switch on only when needed.
Choosing exterior lights for South African conditions
Exterior lights here face harsh sun, Highveld hail and lightning, and salt air at the coast. A few rules help:
- Choose waterproof outdoor lights rated at least IP44 under cover and IP65 in the open
- Pick LED outdoor lighting to keep municipal or Eskom tariffs down
- Use marine-grade aluminium, stainless steel or UV-stable polycarbonate near the sea
- Add solar or battery backup where load-shedding leaves the yard dark
Supply only or supply and install
Some buyers only want outdoor lights for sale and fit them themselves, usually plug-in or solar types. Anything wired into 230 V mains should be connected by a registered electrician, who issues a Certificate of Compliance for new circuits. Say on your request whether you need outdoor lighting installation as well, so suppliers and installers can quote the parts and labour separately.
What to include in your request
- List each area and the fittings you want there
- Say whether you need supply only or supply and install
- Give the property type and rough distances for cabling
- Mention solar or backup needs for load-shedding
- Note coastal salt air or estate body corporate rules
