Gauteng
Gauteng packs more outdoor lighting work into a small area than anywhere else in the country. Security estates in Midrand and Centurion, walled family homes in Johannesburg's older suburbs, townhouse complexes across Ekurhuleni and warehouse yards along the N3 and R21 all want reliable light after dark. Highveld summer storms bring fierce lightning and hail, so surge protection and impact-rated diffusers matter, while winter frost and dust test seals. Load-shedding and stolen streetlight cable have pushed many owners toward solar floods and battery backup. Estate associations often limit glare and colour temperature, and every fixed mains circuit needs a registered electrician's Certificate of Compliance.

Mpumalanga
Outdoor lighting in Mpumalanga splits along the escarpment. On the Highveld, mine villages, power station housing and plant yards around eMalahleni, Middelburg and Secunda need tough floodlights that shrug off coal dust and hard frost. Below the escarpment, Mbombela, White River and Hazyview mix suburban homes, citrus and macadamia farms and safari lodges near the Kruger Park, where guests and rangers prefer warm, shielded fittings that keep the night sky dark and do not disturb wildlife. Lowveld humidity and heavy summer storms call for sealed, surge-protected units. Farms far from reliable supply lean on solar, and any new mains circuit needs an electrician's CoC.
North West
North West's lighting demand follows the platinum belt and the farming towns. Mine hostels, contractor yards and plant perimeters around Rustenburg and Brits use high-mast and flood lighting around the clock, while Hartbeespoort's lakeside estates and weekend homes want subtle garden and jetty lighting. Further west, Lichtenburg, Vryburg and Mahikeng are surrounded by cattle and maize farms where solar yard lights make sense because grid lines are long and supply is patchy. Dry winters bring dust and sharp frost, and summer storms bring lightning. Lodges in the Pilanesberg area favour warm, low fittings that respect the reserve, and mains work needs a CoC.
Limpopo
Limpopo is big, hot and often far from a dependable grid, which makes it natural solar country. Game farms and lodges around the Waterberg, Hoedspruit and the Kruger's western edge want discreet, warm-toned lighting that keeps insects and wildlife undisturbed. Polokwane, Tzaneen and Mokopane have growing suburbs and townhouse complexes needing security lighting for walls and driveways, while mines near Lephalale, Phalaborwa and Steelpoort run large floodlit yards. Summer heat shortens cheap LED driver life, and violent thunderstorms bring lightning surges. Insect-resistant sealed fittings help in the humid Lowveld. Local installers travel long distances, so group jobs, and insist on a CoC for any mains wiring.
Northern Cape
The Northern Cape has the strongest sunshine in South Africa and some of its longest distances between towns, so solar outdoor lighting is often the first choice rather than a backup. Kimberley and Upington have suburban homes and complexes needing perimeter and garden lights, while iron ore and manganese mines near Kathu and Kuruman light huge yards. Sheep farms in the Karoo and vineyards along the Orange River rely on standalone solar floods. Intense UV yellows cheap plastics, and dust storms and large day-night temperature swings stress seals. Near Sutherland's observatory, dark-sky rules matter. Installers are thin on the ground, so plan ahead and request a CoC.
Free State
Outdoor lighting in the Free State serves a mix of city suburbs, mining towns and wide farmland. Bloemfontein's suburbs and growing estates want security and garden lighting, Welkom and Virginia have goldfields housing and industrial yards, and Sasolburg's chemical plants need certified heavy-duty floods. Across the maize and sunflower farms, solar yard and shed lights save running long cables. The Eastern Free State around Clarens and Harrismith adds guesthouses that want gentle, warm lighting. Winters are among the coldest in the country, with hard frost, and spring winds carry dust. Summer hail is common. Rural streetlight failures are frequent, and new mains points need a CoC.
KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal's outdoor lighting must cope with salt, humidity and heavy summer rain. Coastal homes and estates from Ballito and Umhlanga to the South Coast need marine-grade fittings, because sea air corrodes standard steel and cheap aluminium within a season or two. Inland, Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands mix older suburbs, country estates and wedding venues that want warm landscape lighting, while Richards Bay and the Durban port run large industrial yards. Game lodges in Zululand favour shielded, wildlife-friendly fittings. Lightning is severe across the interior. Solar works but sizing should allow for cloudy spells, and any fixed mains circuit needs a registered electrician's CoC.
Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape stretches from windy coastal metros to remote rural hills, and outdoor lighting needs vary accordingly. Gqeberha and East London have suburban homes, security complexes and automotive and port industry with big yards to light. Coastal towns such as Jeffreys Bay, Port Alfred and Kenton-on-Sea face salt spray and strong winds, so corrosion-resistant fittings are essential. Private game reserves near Addo and Grahamstown, now Makhanda, prefer low-glare, warm lighting. Inland, Karoo farms and towns like Graaff-Reinet see harsh frost. Municipal streetlight outages are common in many towns, making solar security lights popular. Mains connections should carry a CoC.
Western Cape
The Western Cape blends coastal living, winelands estates and dry interior farms, and outdoor lighting has to suit each. Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard and False Bay homes battle salt spray and the south-easter, needing marine-grade fittings. Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek estates and wine farms want elegant landscape and pathway lighting, often under strict architectural and heritage rules on light spill. The Garden Route mixes holiday homes and guesthouses in damp, forested settings, while the Karoo towns face dust and frost. Winter rain tests every seal. Solar works well in summer but needs winter sizing, and fixed mains wiring needs a registered electrician's CoC.
